Listen here! Interactivity #2

One of the most influential technologies in the field of music education would have to be the Phonograph, which was invented in 1877. This invention created the recording industry and would later inspire the formation of smaller, portable, and user friendly recording devices, which do not only benefit musicians but also those who appreciate music as well.

Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.

  1. First of all, I think you're picture is awesome and I had to say it. I also like the quote you used, i've used that quote many times before. I also chose the phonograph as the technology in music, so I agree with you on how it is one of the most influential technologies in music education. I think it's an amazing invention in itself and it's amazing how it has branched out so much and how we now have so many new technologies from it.

  2. Cassandra, interesting photo. Can you help me understand your choice of technology and how it relates to schooling?

  3. Thanks, Trisha! I wanted to find an image of technology that was honest to its "roots".
Hi, Kevin! Prior to the invention of the phonograph, music was only able to be experienced live, which was often quite expensive and not easily accessible. The phonograph and recording industry offered the opportunity for music to be recorded and distributed at a remarkably reduced cost.
Many generations later came portable music players, such as the Walkman and iPod, which give students of all ages the ability to listen to whatever music they'd like for little or no cost beyond the price of the item itself. Studies have shown that music helps us focus and learn. Furthermore, musicians do a great deal of passive learning by listening. Utilizing recordings in the classroom offer this twofold effect for those in music education.
